MBB vs IB for HF

What’s better to position yourself for hedge funds eventually? I’m talking about doing PE specific work at MBB or IB. It sounds like IB > PE > HF is common but these consulting PE groups give you so much experience looking at various companies. Feels like it might be better for HFs.

I’m at MBB. It can definitely get you to good PE funds and from there you can go to good HFs. However, I’ve never heard anyone go from MBB to HF directly, at least out of undergrad. You’ll learn a lot about strategy at MBB but little to nothing about financial modeling, so it’s not the best suited.

Occasionally some of the STEM PhDs and MDs do exit to HFs but that’s for their domain knowledge.

I wonder why that is? I can't think of another firm that has a policy like that
