Have just started my IB job in HK and 1 month in have had a bad medical problem and will end up probably taking a month away from work. Can people share their thoughts on how to recover from this / any stories to make me feel better?

I would not worry about what others think because your health is more important. Plus, there will be some kind colleagues in your office as well.
I would focus on your recovery. When you are well, you can ask for extra work or things to show initiative if you are worried. Wish you well!
