Meeting with IB associate this week
No secret that getting into finance from a non-target school, with zero finance exp is beyond difficult, esp without connections. I have a masters in biotech and have tried applying for tons of biotech ER jobs but none replied as they prefer target schools and/or finance experience.
Anyhow, through a friend of a friend, I had an MD at a BB vouch for me and this person passed my resume along to the bank's healthcare team. I was under the impression that it was a biotech ER group but seems I got directed to the healthcare investment banking team LOL
Albeit, I am extremely grateful as I now have a meeting to meet with one of the healthcare banking associates.
They are aware that I do not have finance experience, saw my resume and know I have a lot of knowledge in science/biotech. Should I even try broaching the subject of biotech ER? or just go with the flow and see what comes out of the meeting? I understand that ER and IB are two very different roles and I dont really see myself doing IB as that lifestyle seems extremely intense. The person I am meeting has an MBA and a science background FWIW.
Would love to hear your thoughts on how I should prepare for this meeting! Thanks
IB and ER are not allowed to interact at all for compliance reasons, so keep that in mind if you're trying to network into ER.
Nonetheless this seems like a good opportunity to get some advice, ask questions about the industry and the associate's path into it - treat it like a coffee chat. Nothing wrong with saying you're more interested in ER, but if you want to do IB at all this could lead to an interview.
TBH, I dont see this as a long term career but Im curious about biotech in banking in general and given that ER or IB will prob both entail long hours, I guess what it comes down to is where I will be able to learn new information/biotech and which one has a faster $$$ potential when starting out as a junior employee
For various reasons, I find myself in need of savings to support family etc and to be totally honest, I would be fine either way but would like some insight on which is the path (ER or IB to quicker $. I know finance is a tough field either way.
