I've seen MM analysts go to pretty much every elite school out there. Where you work is only one component of your application. Don't think that going to an MM will preclude you from going to a top school.

This is the credited response.

Where you work does matter, but not in the sense that you're thinking of. Having "Bain" on your resume does nothing for you if you work in Bain's tech support department. The point is, the job FUNCTION is far more important than the company name. The reason Bain Consultants place so well into MBA programs is the job function of a Bain Associate is well known and very highly regarded amongst the MBA community. That said, it is very possible someone could go to Bain as a consultant and get a terrible experience, in which case their b-school app would suffer.

Another thing to consider is the types of people that typically end up at Bain. Bain hires very intelligent people from top universities with top marks. When applying to b-schools, these folks not only have top notch experience but they are likely superstars in other areas of their life. So, the question is, does Bain place well into MBA programs because its Bain or does it place well because the people it hires are already very successful people?

Note that while I used Bain as an example, the same message can be applied to all the top consulting firms, investment banks, and private equity shops.

Yes, obviously a big brand can be helpful, but only marginally so, and I think your point about the other attributes of the people who are hired by those firms, is well made.

But i stand by my overarching point, and especially with respect to the original question re: mm banks...it's a non-issue, and certainly not something to worry about before you even take a job. Do good work, get good recs, write good essays. You'll be fine.

Great responses / info.

To bolster my application, I've heard community service/volunteer works help. However with the long workweeks, how do you guys fit this in?

I think its funny how people say this about where you work not mattering, but then the M/BB guys are the first ones getting interviews at H/S/W

johnbbi've never seen a piper jaffray guy getting into hbs

just saying

a quick linkedin search shows several who have. considering you're still in college and evidently recently just got rejected by baml, i'm curious how many people you've seen from anywhere getting into hbs.
