Moving from NYC IB to London
Hi everyone - I’m currently an associate at a MM bank in NYC. Due to visa issues, I’ll need to leave the US in ~1 year, and ideally I’d like to make the move to London.
I’d really appreciate any advice on when I should start looking and which paths are most realistic for someone in my position.
A few options I’m considering:
- Internal transfer to London: probably the easiest path logistically, although my bank’s London presence is relatively small, so I'll be giving up a meaningful amount of deal experience / exposure
- Lateral to another IB role in London: open to moving firms, but I’m not sure how many opportunities there are at the asso level or when I should realistically start reaching out / applying
- PE / VC / startups / other roles: would appreciate any insights on moving directly from US IB to these roles
For those who have made a similar move, how far in advance would you recommend starting the process, and which route would you prioritize? Also curious whether there are any particular banks / funds / platforms that are more open to hiring US-based applicants looking to relocate.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
