clearly if you start off in RE then your skills are going to be focused on RE and you're likely to stay in RE PE / RE IB for the remainder of your career... if you want to go into vanilla PE one day, this is not the right stepping stone.

That said, MS RE has an excellent name in REPE. They've been hit during the crisis, but so has everyone, and they remain one of the best names in all of RE. They have insanely large AUM and you'll learn a lot. It's a top level job in the RE business - perhaps comparable to a position at Blackstone, Carlyle, Apollo, Starwood, etc...

^^^true. I didn't even realize they split it up. If they do, then you want to be in Acquisitions.

From what i've heard they have a sick program of letting analyst work in both REIB and REPE simultaneously on a project by project basis... but that's just a rumor.

Echo what everyone has said so far

-If you want to do RE, this is one of the best groups to start your career in. If you don't want to do RE, try to get into another group

-Analysts in NY work on both IB and PE deals. Not sure how it is in London but I think it's the same

-Pay is the same as IBD, analysts are part of the MS IBD analyst program

-Above only applies if you're in acquisitions

thanks everyone for their comments...

regarding whether i want to do RE or not, i don't know for sure. I am interested in all the sectors and would like to develop a general view of business strategy. RE is definitely interesting but is the experience their not very transferable if one day i want to get out finance to start my own thing?

you could always get an MBA. a 3-year analyst stint in MSREF will have no problem placing into one of the top schools (knew someone in MSREF US and she once said analysts from the group are getting in mostly H/W/S)

I work in RE and find it to be really cool (not only do I like the finance side, which is my job, but I also like architecture / engineering related stuff which makes if more interesting for me)... but I have to tell you, if you really do want to develop a general view / business acumen and also want to have a chance to move into other areas in the future, then RE is not the right place for you to be - even at a great place like MS.

If you have another BB IBD offer in a more general group I'd say you should go that route.
