MSBA worth it?

I did my undergrad at a large start school (super non-target) and got okay grades 3.5+. I am currently working Operations at a BB and want to make a pivot to something more FO. Ideally IB or Consulting. After being at the firm for 1 year I have realized internal mobility is both limited and competitive but Operations is a dead end job with no transferable skills to FO. I am debating getting a MSBA from a target school for the purpose of having another year of job recruiting with a target school in my resume.

Note: I am not happy with the location I am working and believe the MSBA would help me place into a NYC, Chicago

Based on the most helpful WSO content, pursuing an MSBA (Master of Science in Business Analytics) might not be the optimal route for your goals of transitioning into IB or Consulting. Here's why:

  1. MSBA's Focus: MSBA programs are typically tailored for roles in data analytics, business intelligence, and tech-related fields. While they are valuable for those paths, they don't align well with the skillsets or recruiting pipelines for IB or Consulting.

  2. Better Alternatives: If your ultimate goal is IB or Consulting, an MBA from a top-tier program would be a more effective choice. MBA programs, especially those in the top 10-20, have strong recruiting pipelines for both IB and Consulting, and they provide the networking opportunities and brand recognition needed to make the pivot.

  3. Your Current Profile: With a 3.5+ GPA from a non-target and experience in Operations at a BB, you already have a decent foundation. Instead of an MSBA, consider:

    • Networking aggressively within your current firm to explore any lateral opportunities.
    • Building transferable skills through certifications (e.g., CFA for IB or relevant consulting certifications).
    • Targeting an MBA program that aligns with your goals and offers strong placement in NYC or Chicago.
  4. Location and Recruiting: If you're unhappy with your current location and want to recruit in NYC or Chicago, an MBA from a target school in those regions (e.g., Stern, Booth, Kellogg) would provide a much stronger platform for your career pivot than an MSBA.

In summary, while an MSBA might help with location and provide another shot at recruiting, it won't directly address your goal of transitioning into IB or Consulting. An MBA would be a more strategic investment for your career aspirations.
