Need Advice, Am I SCREWED For Banking Forever?
Hello WSO monkeys,
I'm a student at a top Canadian university pursuing a degree in actuarial science (math), but I want to have a career in Investment Banking. I'm currently in my freshman summer and actively seeking IB internships. I have a GPA on the low side (3.35) because my school is known to be tough and I have to take many advanced math courses for my major, rather than accounting and finance classes. I did apply to some boutiques and BBs, but had no response from those. So, I'm currently doing a bad finance internship in Asia which I got through some family connections. On the side, I'm learning financial modeling through WSP and I hope that it could be some useful experience for me. I would greatly appreciate any advice on how to get through the resume screening process and land some interviews. I hope to land a MM boutique SA position in my sophomore summer. Thank you for your help and valuable time.
Are any alumni from your school in IB?
Best advice would be to reach out to any/all alumni you've got
Very few, for each bank there is probably less than 20 and even less (10) for boutiques. The alumni at my school mostly are in the tech field (ie. Google, Facebook, etc.)
If you go to the school I think you do, PM me. I've been in the same shoes as you and was able to land a IB internship at a BB in Toronto. In short, no - you aren't screwed.
You're 100% going to be fine. It's so early still for you and you have a mathematics degree. Fix your GPA up a little bit and start networking to get some decent internships in private equity or banking in the lower middle market and by the time you're a junior you'll be golden.
Math, Intern in Asia, Potential U of T student..... Do I see a theme. LOL
