Networking during S&T internship with IBD teams?
Similar to another topic at this page currently.
I will be doing an S&T internship this summer at GS/MS/JPM bank. I really lookforward to it, but I just recently finished an M&A internship at an MM bank. I also really enjoyed this. I think M&A suits me much better in the long-term, especially at this S&T bank.
Would you think it is risky to also network a little bit in the firm with the IBD teams during my internship? For example, so I could end up interviewing for FT M&A position?
What is your opinion? It seems logical in my head, and achievable, but at the same time risky and illogical.
Thanks...
was at a bb that you mentioned last year. hr was explicit in that there was no movement into ib towards the end of the summer. i wouldn't place your marbles on transferring internally. i would try to get into the ft pipeline for other banks. you have an easy story on why you're switching from s&t to m&a, so provided everything else is good, you'll be in a competitive position.
look out for events at other banks that are dedicated towards ft recruitment. reach out to contacts you have at those banks so that you can be kept in the loop/on the radar for ft recruitment.
HR saying there is no chance of moving around the bank is a little odd, usually HR is very much open to internal moves, especially if the person would be a more motivated higher performer elsewhere. In my summer class HR made an announcement on one of the last days that there would be internal super days for those interested in other parts of the bank. Most remained but some switched from s&t to quant or vice versa - I believe one or two did switch into banking.
.
which bank did you intern at?
To answer the above, yes it was mostly FO to FO, although I believe there was someone who went from BO finance type role to FO S&T, so I am sure it can be done elsewhere. It all has to do with how well you can network.
I was at a BB.
Sorry for not being much help, but I was wondering why you feel IB is a better fit? I feel like s&t would would be more exciting and have better hours. As someone trying to make similar decisions, I would love to know. Thanks
Less stressful work. Of course the hours are and the deadlines. But less suprises in terms of market movements. Furthermore I am better suited for tangible things (real companies, real people, real acquisitions) instead of the intangible world of trading.
Also I have become risk averse and career in M&A is less risky.
