Networking for IB but offered chance in another dept

I was trying to network for an IB career transition and ended up with a wonderful connection who is willing to coach and mentor me. However, though they work for a BB, they are not in IB but a back office dept; it's still a great dept. They offered to pull the ropes to try to get me on their team. The pay or other factors aren't bad, it's just not exactly what I'm looking for. Their comment was that I could try to do a lateral transfer after putting my foot in the door as this is a major BB.

  1. What are the realistic chances of this (transfer) happening? My concern is that I'm technically considered a new grad in 2024 which gives me more options to start in IB. I don't want it to be questionable for me to enter this dept then try to transfer again into IB when I'm already making a career transition (my background/career is non-finance).
  2. I'd also appreciate advice in trying to maintain positive connections if the advice is to turn the offer down.

Thank you!
