Networking with Alums

Would be grateful if anyone could share some advice on networking. I realised I probably didn’t do it properly when one of my alums stopped replying to my messages.

When messaging alums, can I ask them sth different from my purpose when contacting them? For example like asking them their opinions about the market, when I initially messaged to ask advice for applying to an MBA. Or perhaps I should abstain from it as it might seem like I'm wasting their time?

And also, if I want them to be my mentor, how should I go about it?
