Networking with VP - should i ask for a freshman internship?

I've spoken to a VP at a bank and one thing he emphasized was how vital it is that I get any front office internship before I graduate.

As a freshman, should I ask if there's anything I can do over the summer at the firm? I don't mind working unpaid, I'm just wondering if I should or if he'll think the idea of a freshman doing any finance work is ridiculous.

you have nothing to lose, i interned at a boutique right after my freshman year and spent most of my time making buyers lists, pulling industry research reports for the analysts, and helping out an associate with comps lists and private equity networking / research.

towards the end of the internship, one of the MDs let me put together a presentation for a private equity firm that we were going to pitch to in a couple of weeks... i would push hard for the internship, and show them that you can do the basic simple tasks first (printing, filing, etc.) and then they will give you more interesting finance-related work
