Nomura London Investment Banking Sector Teams

Hi everyone,

I will be interning at Nomura in Investment Banking this summer and we will soon have to make choices regarding the teams we want to join.

I am not very familiar with their sector teams and their reputation in London, and wasn't able to find much on the internet either. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could provide some insight in terms of team "prestige"/recognition, culture, dealflow, work-life balance, maybe even conversion rate, etc?

For now, the teams I am more interested in are Healthcare, Consumer, TMS (Technology, Media and Services), GII (Greentech, Industrials and Infrastructure) and M&A, but happy to hear about other teams as well. Any input would be helpful really.

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a breakdown of Nomura's London Investment Banking sector teams:

  1. Top Teams at Nomura London:

    • Natural Resources & Infrastructure (NatRes + Infra): Frequently mentioned as one of the strongest teams at Nomura London.
    • Consumer: Another well-regarded team with solid deal flow.
    • TMT (Technology, Media, and Telecommunications): Known for its activity and recognition, though opinions on prestige vary.
    • Leverage Finance (LevFin): Highlighted as a strong group with good deal flow.
  2. GII (Greentech, Industrials, and Infrastructure):

    • This team has absorbed Nomura Greentech and is particularly strong in EMEA. It has robust deal flow, often acting as a sole advisor without financing. While the team is known for being a "sweatshop" with intense hours, it offers excellent exposure and solid exit opportunities to BB/EB and MM PE firms. Exits to mega-funds (MF) are more limited but improving as the team’s reputation grows.
  3. M&A:

    • M&A is a core focus at Nomura, and the group is generally well-regarded. However, specific details about its London performance are less clear compared to other teams.
  4. Work-Life Balance and Culture:

    • Nomura’s culture can vary by team, but some groups, like GII, are known for demanding hours. Teams like Consumer and TMT may offer a slightly better balance, but this is highly dependent on deal flow and team dynamics.
  5. Conversion Rates:

    • While specific conversion rates are not detailed in the WSO threads, strong performance in top teams like NatRes, Infra, and LevFin likely increases your chances of securing a full-time offer.

Recommendations:

  • If you’re interested in Greentech and sustainability, GII is a great choice despite the intense workload.
  • For a broader sector focus, NatRes + Infra or Consumer are strong bets.
  • If you’re drawn to tech and innovation, TMT could be a good fit, though it’s worth gathering more specific feedback on the team’s current standing.

Ultimately, your choice should align with your long-term career goals, interests, and tolerance for work intensity.

Yeah I am speaking to people from Nomura, but I am also looking for a more comprehensive and perhaps more objective perspective
