Non-compete

Guys! I am a senior associate in a BB just moved to NYC last month. I will likely get promoted to VP and looking to move into EB afterwards. What is the process around non-compete in the US; do they give you a new contract to sign with an extended clause?) and what is standard for a VP (3 months)? Any insight would be helpful.
