Non-Fleece Vest in the office?
So obviously most wear the classic fleece Patagonia in grey black or navy. Occasionally I’ll see some associates sporting a puffier quilter vest. I’m currently in the market for a new vest or two and don’t necessarily want to go the Patagonia route. However, when I look at Barbour and Peter Millar options, their best are certainly non fleece. So I’m wondering do these work for the office or is it strictly outdoor layer?
Holderness and Bourne has some that are nice. I think it honestly looks more fashionable when it’s not fleece or puffer
While the fleece Patagonia vest—mundane and disappointingly ubiquitous—has somehow ingrained itself into the dull, monotonous rhythms of office life, I find myself repulsed by its overuse. Every associate, analyst, and MD in their ‘safe’ greys, blacks, and navies, blending in like they’re part of some unspoken uniform, as if hoping not to be noticed. It’s pathetic.
When you mention Barbour and Peter Millar, I almost shudder. Yes, they’re fine, but let’s be real, they’re relics for weekends in the Hamptons, not for making a statement on a Monday morning in Midtown.
No, if you’re truly serious about standing out—while still maintaining the sleek, minimalist aesthetics essential to high finance—you should consider the Arc’teryx Atom SL vest. Lightweight yet designed with precision, it’s not just outerwear, it’s an experience. The material is breathable, yet weather-resistant, perfect for transitions between the boardroom and the biting October wind on your walk back from Katsuya.
Unlike those puffy, quilted embarrassments, the Atom SL vest exudes a quiet dominance, a calculated coldness. It’s not loud, but when you wear it, people will know—they’ll know you’re someone who pays attention to the details, to the finer things. And frankly, that’s all that matters.
Totally agree that the Atom Vest is great but this is the most over the board review I have seen. Are you good my guy?
Know of any other similar vests besides the Arctery'x to put into the rotation?
Marmot makes good quality stuff and is somewhat cheaper than Arcteryx.
you should work for J Peterman
Aesthetically - no one gives a shit if you don't make a big deal about it.
Functionally - depends on what you like.
Personally I wear the navy arcteryx vest - does what I need. If it's not cold outside and I don't wear it into the office, I wear the fleece one.
You're overthinking this... the only thing to focus on is not standing out in a meaningful way.
