Non–Russell Group non-targets in London PE internships

Is it true that it is a possible occurrence? I hear lots of non-diversity non-targets getting London PE internships—but I presume they are still from Russell Group schools—do I stand a chance with previous IB internships even if I'm from a non–Rusell Group group nontarget school such as one located outside UK/Europe? Is any attempt to apply to London PE off cycles & summers a waste of time?

As a follow up, what SPECIFIC kinds/examples of PE firms do non-target internship applicants get into?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights:

  1. Non-Target to Private Equity:

    • It is possible for non-target candidates to secure internships in Private Equity (PE) firms, even if they are not from Russell Group schools. Success stories include individuals from non-target universities who have made it into PE roles through perseverance and strategic networking.
  2. Previous IB Internships:

    • Having previous Investment Banking (IB) internships can significantly bolster your chances. Experience in IB is highly valued in PE recruiting, and it can help offset the non-target school background.
  3. Applying to London PE Off-Cycles & Summers:

    • Applying to off-cycle and summer internships in London PE is not a waste of time. Many firms are open to diverse backgrounds, especially if you have relevant experience and can demonstrate strong performance in interviews.
  4. Specific PE Firms for Non-Target Applicants:

    • While the context does not list specific PE firms, it mentions that non-target candidates have successfully landed roles at notable firms. Examples include:
      • Blackstone REPE
      • Starwood Capital Group
      • KKR
  5. Diversity Programs:

    • Some paths to internships are specifically designed for underrepresented groups, such as Latinos, African Americans, and Native Americans. These programs can provide additional opportunities for non-target candidates.

In summary, while being from a non-Russell Group non-target school may present challenges, it is not an insurmountable barrier. Leveraging previous IB experience, applying strategically, and considering diversity programs can enhance your chances of securing a PE internship in London.

It’s possible but not at a UMM/MF, I’d say solid shot at a MM assuming decent prior IB Experience.
