"Off-Track" for offer
Had my performance review at BB last week and was told I was "off-track" for an offer. Told I was smart but needed to be more confident and ask more questions. Only problem is I'm rotating into a different section of the group for the second half of the internship, so the people I was working with won't be able to see improvement. Advice on how to get back on track? ANybody heard of offers handed out after a poor mid-summer review?
tough situation...
Perfect situation...you will not be weighed down by people's first impressions --- start strong.
Also that feedback does not sound "right" in terms of being serious enough for you to not be "on track."
Is your not asking questions leading to work being done incorrectly? Do you never say anything, kill conversations, etc?
"Confidence" and "asking questions" should not be deal breakers in and of themselves... must be real outlier problems if they are coming up or you are misunderstanding. Is the group really small? High emphasis on "fit"?
If you are indeed perfect except that you are not outgoing, make conversations, etc then consider looking at other groups at the bank and suggest that this was a horrible culture fit. Of course, you'll need feedback that says you are perfectly proficient but not a good fit in current group.
Easiest is just be super outgoing in the new area you are in for last 2 weeks: ask ppl out for coffee, setup a movie night, go out for drinks, etc, and put out feelers for lateraling to another part of the bank.
ibes, I completely agree that it doesn't sound "right." The group itself is big but it is divided into small pods where only 2-4 people work together, so maybe they are just sugarcoating that I'm not a good fit.
Definitely agree on your point about putting out feelers and I've started to do that, but I think it's probably prertty difficult to get an offer with another group without having an offer in place for my current group.
bump bump bump!!!
does no offer=blacklisted?
No, but whatever was in your review to have you not get the offer will probably be there if/when you reapply at the firm. I don't think you'll get an FT offer from them this year if you've been rejected out of the internship, but you still might get one in two or three years. Just be ready for questions about your internship and reconciling your answers against whatever might be in your review.
ibes, you were completely right. second half of the summer went well, got the offer today. thanks for the input
