Online assessment centres?

Hi all. I’m currently in the process with a BB for an IBD internship in London. I’ve passed 2 rounds of interviews and my latest interview was quite positive. The next phase is going to be an assessment centre in their HQ. I have a strict visa deadline to leave the UK within 2 weeks as my internship just ended. I asked the BB for clarification on the timeline and they said they don’t have any specific details at the moment, BUT, they could accommodate online attendance for the AC.

I wanted to ask - how frequently are these online ACs held? More importantly, does anyone know if the candidate is in disadvantage if they attend online instead of in person?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, online assessment centers (ACs) are not uncommon, especially post-pandemic, as many firms have adapted to virtual formats. However, the frequency of online ACs can vary significantly depending on the bank and their specific recruitment processes. Some banks, like Macquarie, have been noted for their quick turnaround in online assessments, reviewing videos and providing feedback within a week or two.

As for whether attending online puts you at a disadvantage, it largely depends on the structure of the AC and the bank's approach. While online formats can sometimes limit the ability to build rapport or showcase interpersonal skills as effectively as in-person interactions, many firms have optimized their virtual processes to ensure fairness. To maximize your chances:

  1. Prepare thoroughly: Be ready for all types of questions—fit, behavioral, technical, and even brain teasers. For technical questions, ensure you have a solid understanding of accounting, DCF, comps, and LBOs, as these are commonly tested.

  2. Test your tech setup: Ensure your internet connection, camera, and microphone are reliable to avoid any disruptions during the AC.

  3. Engage actively: Make an effort to communicate clearly and confidently, as this can help compensate for the lack of physical presence.

Ultimately, while there might be slight differences in dynamics, attending an online AC should not inherently disadvantage you if you prepare well and approach it professionally.
