PARANOID ABOUT HR

Ever since January, I have been applying for an internship literally everywhere. I have put in the extra effort simply because I come from a non target. I got 2 interviews from BB's and one from a local. But, still no dice. I am in desperate need of an internship opportunity. I cold called this one firm 2 days ago and spoke with an HR VP. I asked for the status of my summer internship application as I told him I have already applied online. (I found this internship opening through my career center job posting, and not OCR) He replied saying that there were too many applications online so he would rather take my resume via email. (I thought that was a good sign showing that my direct-calling was actually meaningful) We exchanged emails with my resume attached exactly on Wednesday (2 days ago). It is now Friday, and I'm paranoid as HELL because I'm not getting any response. I know this is a foolish thread being paranoid and impatient, but you have to understand this is my only shot. Should I definitely wait out a few more business days before I email or call him again to follow up? Is it understandable that he takes this long to get back to me?

Thanks for reading, I had to let it out.

Sometimes you just have to wait. They might forget to email you back, but they're not going to forget they need to hire someone. For one of my internships, I didn't get an email back until 5 weeks after I had submitted my application, it just took them a while because they did have other things to worry about besides my internship application. On the other hand, I was flown to another city for a final round interview for a different position. They never told me whether or not I got the offer. About 4 weeks after the interview I emailed HR. They never got back to me.

You never know what is going on in the hiring process. Be patient, but don't stop applying for other positions. You can shoot them an email or two, but bugging them will not help.

harsh reality: you need to stop patting yourself on the back by dropping your resumes into the black hole of online resume submissions - yes, even if you drop 200, your likelihood of getting a call is still low

what you need to do: get more people on the phone, do more informational interviews with alums, friends of friends. let everyone and their mother know what you are looking for.

If that doesnt work, maybe you can help out WSO for the summer and at least have something finance related on your resume. Contact WallStreetOasis.com>[email protected] ...our team is growing a lot in various areas. It's not glamorous (or paid) work, but it is better than nothing. And for our best interns, I have been known to serve as a good reference.

Thanks and good luck, Patrick

^^ Thanks for the feedback guys. By looking at my actions these days, it seems like I'm losing a lot of motivation for everything. I'm exhausted. I just play poker with friends instead of taking that extra time to study or whatnot. I don't feel like studying for exams as much anymore and I want to just procrastinate from now on till the end of the semester. I'm a junior and if I don't get an internship this summer, it will be end of the world for me. And also to have in mind, it is my most important year. I just don't know what to do anymore. I refuse to go on vacation or to spend the entire summer hanging out. I'm mentally and physically exhausted.

The key thing to remember is that while this is the most important thing in your life right now, it is an absolutely minimal priority for the bank. Many folks view recruiting, particularly summer analyst recruiting, as a painful administrative task that they'd rather not deal with. Even if HR absolutely loves your resume, it takes time to track down the appropriate people to interview you and get the process rolling. Patience is importance. Some firms are "on their game" and get back to candidates within 24 hours, some take multiple weeks. That's why all the questions regarding "how long does it take HR to respond" are pointless -- it varies substantially.
