Pb vs IB

So I eventually want to go into the buy side, as I have always been passionate about investing. Would private banking be best to eventually get into an investment fund (hf, pe, am, or even vc, not sure yet, I’m interested in all of them) since it is more of an investment role, or would Ib be the best path?

There’s a good chance that the most widely used sentence on this forum is something along the lines of “IB to PE/HF”. There’s also a good chance that the phrase “Private banking to PE” has been used less than 10 times ever.

This.

However, the world of private banking is actually one that is growing and something that rich people will gladly pay for if they like you/your boss. If you are their trusted confidant, then you can eventually run a family office (which is probably the sweetest buy-side gig if with the right family) or move to another indirect buyside role, think FoF, endowment, foundation etc. The hours are generally better and if your clients like you, the comp is sky is the limit.

But to be frank, I have not seen many people make that switch (ie to PE/VC etc). I have seen/heard of people who made the move from PB to say S&T where they serviced HF clients and then moved that way, but that's much more trading ( like FX, etc and derivatives which has its own issues with the rapid change of technology), rather investing (ie. LO, PE, VC etc).

A final thought if you are in one of the big banks then you may be able to move internally especially early in your career. I have seen that as well but have no idea how that works.

Good Luck

I used to do Asia-Pacific PE (kind of like FoF). Now I do something else but happy to try and answer questions on that stuff.
