PE and HF From BB Analyst Program
Headhunters start contacting us shortly, if not already, and i'm curious:
1) How many buyside options are legit and prestigious places to go before b school
2) Is it common for the people who come on as junior people to get promoted after two years, or is it more up and out
3) What is the career trajectory in general for people who've left banking for the buyside? in particular, there seems to be more of a pyramid structure to these firms making it harder to have a big career
thanks.
1) For PE, you can research the firms very easily and the big-names (KKR, Blackstone, TPG etc.) are always safe bets. At a BB most of the opportunities presented to you will be prestigious, legit places. For HFs it's a bit trickier because there are tons out there and they are very secretive. The top names like Och-Ziff, Farallon, Renaissance, etc. are again solid bets but you will have to do your own diligence on HFs much more so than with PE opps.
2) For HFs they don't really care about b-school and will keep you around if you're a top performer. PE is more traditional and tends to send people back to b-school before they can be promoted, but that may not be true at all PEs... really depends on the firm.
3) It's somewhat less stable because they can be very trigger-happy if you're not a top performer. In general it is pretty difficult to reach the top on the buyside (well, even in banking it's difficult...) and the people who do tend to stay there for a long time.
