PE/HF/3rd Year/ Bschool?

Hey guys,

1st year analyst here...

For those that went into banking not knowing what PE/HF was, how long in did you know what you wanted to do after your 2-year analyst stint? and what made you decide one way or another?

Thanks in advance

If you do a 3rd year, that usually means you want to do banking as a career right? Or am I wrong? Would people do a 3rd year to give themselves more experience/time to prepare for PE/HF recruiting?

How did you go into banking without knowing what a PE fund or HF was? If you are interested in going one of those routes, then go that route. If you're not sure yet, sign on for the third year. It's not looked down upon and will give you more time to interview for those interviews if you decide to go that route. It's not uncommon for some PE firms or HFs to make you stay for a full three years if they think you will benefit from learning more, especially if you work at a shop that doesn't have a ton of transactions requiring modeling.

@neanderthal- doing a third year as an analyst doesn't mean you want to do banking as a career. Direct promote to from analyst to associate typically does.
