Penultimate year - how strict?
I'm in my last year of university and want to apply for a summer internship. What are my chances if my profile is very solid, yet I am not in my penultimate year?
I wa a summer intern at a BB last year and we had a couple of people in our class who had just finished university, also these people were really sought after, because they could start immediately. I want to do ER instead. I will be doing a master, so it might actually be my penultimate year, in case I do a 1-year Master, say at LSE. I just don't know for sure yet.
I know I could have asked this in the ER forum too, but this one is just infinitely more liquid and this question would be the same if I decided to go for IBD again...
I personally would only look to hire someone from the antepenultimate year, but that's just me.
Could you please elaborate on why that is? If, like the OP said, a student does a 1-year master's program, what's wrong with taking them for a summer internship?
I would say your chances are as good or better than penultimate year students, most of who won't already have done a summer internship, a lot of people are doing that this year that failed to convert their summer intern offers last summer because of the markets. You might even get an offer, as you said, to start a FT position as soon as your internship finishes.
Hello, I am currently facing the same problem. Did you figure out, which banks are strict about the penultimate year rule?
Banks have become lenient over the past few years with taking on final year students for SA spots.
In London, I've seen interns in their final year at GS, BC, BAML, and DB. Although there isn't a universal policy and it is based on an individual's profile and the division's needs.
