I can confirm what Matthias said, that the MBB guys use Think-Cell... it is so much faster and cleaner than using excel graphs. It is pretty cheap - only about $300 per year per license and I can confirm it saves about 40% of time to create PPT charts from raw data.

analysts make them. Really, charts are the primary output of an analyst. Almost everything you do in excel is eventually put into chart form.
So they just use Excel? Some of the graphs M/B/B makes don't look like Excel graphs though

The technology you're thinking of is called ThinkCell. It can do some pretty amazing stuff that isn't included in stock powerpoint.
