Two areas you should check out are Penn Station (near MSG) and Either side of central park, I am more partial to the upper east, it is cheaper than the west and still allows you to live in a really nice area. But as a rule of thumb, the upper west is the creme-de-la-creme.
That's a completely contrary rule. The UES is much nicer "as a rule."

west side is creme-de-la-creme? Are you out of your mind?? Clearly, you aren't from NYC, let alone the tri-state area. And around Penn Station isn't that great of a place to live either.
