Poland IB internships
Sup, guys!
I’m a Ukrainian guy, and soon I’ll be moving to Poland.
To be honest, I don’t really like Poland or Polish people — but I deeply respect those who genuinely help and support Ukraine. That truly matters, and I’m grateful for it.
Anyway, moving on. I don’t speak Polish or any other language besides English (B2 level), Ukrainian, and Russian. I’m currently pursuing my master’s degree at one of the top private universities in Ukraine.
I have around two years of experience working with a Big 4 firm and a national private equity company.
In Poland, I’m planning to start over — ideally, I’d like to rejoin the Big 4, but what really excites me is the idea of moving toward a bulge bracket bank in the future.
Any advice on where to start or what to focus on would be really appreciated.
"I don’t really like Poland or Polish people"
I hope the Poles send your ungrateful ass back to Russia
Dude, I literally said that "I'm deeply grateful" in the next sentence. Why so angry?
Yea "I'm deeply grateful" only if they help your country.
How many Ukrainians with Big4 and PE experience you think will be applying? I've already circulated that among my friends. You're done kid.
Big 4 merchant. You don’t belong here.
I see
"To be honest, I don’t really like Poland or Polish people" who starts off with this?
I'm kind of a straightforward person
.
This MUST be ragebait. Bro is a Russian bot
No, I'm not
You don't like Poland or polish people? despite the fact Poland took millions of Ukrainian people after the Russia/Ukraine war and has constantly been offering support? lmao what a bad attitude to have
Dude, I literally said it the next question that i greatfull for those for helping
well, it's like with Queers for Palestine. I'm pretty sure palestinians don't like queers but appreciate the support nonetheless.
I never thought this way, but i think that you're correct, more or less
del del del del del del del del
I’m European, this isn’t an opinion between Balkan states or historic rivals, this is just this guy (or bot) being an asshole
Dude, Ukraine and Poland have a lot in common, but on the other hand, there are still many disagreements because of our shared history. So yeah, it’s mostly about historical context and old rivalries.
And if we’re talking about gratitude and respect, just Google the impact of Ukrainian refugees on the Polish economy. Also, don’t forget that we’re literally protecting you from our insane neighbor — Russia.
I honestly don’t understand why so many people seem so calm and sure that Russia will stop with Ukraine and won’t go further into Poland or the Baltics.
And don’t forget that Texans don’t like Californians, Greeks don’t like Turks, and all the Europeans dont likeo gypsies
Kind of a tangent but its always interesting to me that the discourse by hyperliberal white dudes on places like Reddit are always "aSianS aRE So RaCISt" because some people in China don't like Japan due to some of the most heinous warcrimes the world has ever seen in WW2 or because they heard from a friend of a friend that their black friend went to Asia and the people asked to touch their hair.
and then that same person goes on to justify how much they hate gypsies or muslims or whatever group because "you don't get it, its different."
It's always the white liberal dudes on the internet simply can't muster up a drop of self awareness and don't understand that a nationality isn't a race.
People seem to forget the etymology of the word “nation”.
Слава УкраIне!
But don’t fucking “dislike” polish.
Good ppl, good food. Learn polish, adapt or die
Героям Слава !
To be honest that's basic but very important advice, thank you very much
As a Pole don't like your comment. Anyway, If I were you I would start in GS, UBS (this forum would like it), JP Morgan etc which have SSCs in Poland. Most functions are basic (operations, AML etc) but there are also some risk-related 2Lod and even 1LoD jobs (models, portfolio monitoring etc) and after 2-3 years if you are really good you can move internally to London, Frankfurt, Milan etc. Not taken for granted but it happens. Presumably better pick vs BIG4 if you want to break into IB. Good luck.
To be honest, I don’t really like Poland or Polish people
"Warm-water port"
Ahhhh arrogant Ukrainian, might be too much of a brick to make it in anything finance!
The below comes as I make a generous assumption that OP is not a troll/bot:
I think the sentiment is coming from an immature place whereby OP is facing casual racism by Poles (think how UK/German citizens treated Poles when they used to represent a large working class group once upon a time) and does not know how to channel his anger.
That said, this statement on hating a nation will not be of particular help in your predicament.
Agree with the poster above that risk roles at large European/US banks is the best way forward.
Dude, I’m not a troll or a bot, and just because I say “I don’t like pizza” doesn’t mean all Italians should hate me or think I’m some arrogant jerk.
And I don’t understand the anger you are talking about, from my side I'm pretty polite
The thing is, I kinda have to go somewhere I wouldn’t exactly be dying to stay my whole life. Sure, there are amazing people in Poland, and there are crappy people too.
Btw, thanks for the advice, I’ll check it out. In theory, risk stuff could be pretty interesting.
The reason people are giving you shit for it is because it was an unnecessary comment that added nothing to the topic.
Imagine if I said "hey I was homeless but an italian family took me in. How can I get a job in this new town? By the way I hate Italians"
There’s a pretty clear difference between “I hate pizza, it’s gross” (subjective food opinion, no one cares) and “I hate Italians, they repulse me” (personal insult). Notice how the latter of the two is itself quite dissimilar from “Some Italians treat me well, but many also don’t —which is why I’m not interested in remaining here long term”. So, which one do you think is going to come off the least insulting and most informative, especially if you’re looking for work amongst such people?
No, it's actually mostly because the "national hero" of Ukraine is a literal nazi and Polish people are really against nazis. The ukrainians literally worship him like he's a God, and when our government tries to tell them that they can make so many other people their national hero instead of a NAZI they get insanely upset.
I am from EE and speak Russian and Ukrainian fluently though I am neither (studying in the US), but getting an opportunity to do an IB internship there would not be something I would preface with: "I don’t really like Poland or Polish people".
Then go back to Ukraine and fight against the Russians and get an internship in an Ukranian based bank after the war is over.
That's good advice
Believe it or not, but I'm consider that as an option as well as relocation
But also just genuinely curious, after WW2:
Why do you dislike Poles/Poland? I get it if it is related to racism experienced in Poland as there is jealously over how much support Ukrainians are getting from the Polish government while others struggle with inflation.
BBs do not have much real business in Poland.
There is JPM who hires 1 or 2 interns per year for CEE Coverage team (something like two senior people here lol) and if the internship goes well you can get a FT offer in their London’s office. Morgan Stanley also has a small office here with a few people and sometimes they do recruit an intern (not regularly but it happens).
Apart from BBs, Rothschild&Co has a quite strong team here (around 10-15 people in total). Then you have UniCredit (they are coming back to Poland and hired a majority of folks from local Santander IB team as Santander withdraws from Poland), PKO BP (biggest Polish bank), Pekao IB (local Polish bank active mostly in debt advisory and ECM/DCM), mInvestment Banking (Commerzbank group), BNP Paribas CIB (rarely recruiting anyone lol).
Moreover, you have some local boutiques doing mostly M&A and some ECM/DCM deals also (Trigon, Fidea, DC Advisory), also Big4s have some strong corporate finance franchises (PwC, Deloitte).
Anyways, good luck with the hiring process with your attitude and credentials - there are tons of local hardos with top foreign and local uni diplomas who speak Polish fluently which is an essential condition for most of the banking jobs here lol.
