Positioning for PE/HF with limited M&A experience but lots of Equity

How have some of you positioned yourself for PE/HF recruiting with limited M&A deal experience?

Coming from a borderline BB I'm starting to feel like by the time my two years are up I'll probably have worked on a bunch of bookrun IPOs and follow-ons but very limited to no m&a deals.

Is it possible to get into the recruiting mix with only equity transaction experience?

How early should I start reaching out to recruiters. A couple of recruiters have reached out to me but those are for immediate openings and seem like blast emails.

Any advice is appreciated. Trying to figure out how to best position myself and how early I should start making efforts from my end.
