Preparing for networking calls

What recommendations do you all have to prepare for networking chats. I am generally well versed in my technicals and markets, but I feel like my networking chats have been subpar because I can't find the balance of talking about banking vs personal life. How much should a student know about the bank and the banker? Also, do you bankers actually enjoy talking about how interest rates affect the LBO market, or would you rather just have a conversation about hobbies and journey to IB? Obviously this is different person to person, but I want to find a general consensus on how to go about these chats.

That was just an example of like a technical question to ask. At this point I’m confused because some of my chats have asked me techs while others just let me spew. Whole process is hard to wrap your head around.
