Pros & Cons of Classifying as LGBTQIA+

Title. 

Current freshman looking at all these diversity initiatives. As a white male with no sexual attraction for members of my same sex and no immediate desire to dismember my genitalia, what's stopping me from classifying as something as tranquil as Bisexual for the sake of obtaining a D&I insight or internship program? As someone who doesn't believe in the Affirmative Action system and political correctness culture of corporate America (must be noted that I do believe in uplifting poor/first-gen kids of ALL backgrounds), I'm very tempted to apply and get a brand name bank on my resume. People have toyed and poked fun with this idea, so I'd bet certain people have done this and it has benefitted them and I'd love to see how that turned out. I'd like to explore the practicality and different perspectives of this from both senior and junior lens. Aside from MAYBE infringing on morals, I genuinely can't think of anything that could go wrong. Please shed some light.

Some BIG questions:

Q1: What's the process like for this? Obviously I won't have to prove that I enjoy performing fellatios –although I'd be on my knees in a heart beat for a Goldman Sacks MD– but will anything about my self-classified Bisexuality come up during interview, program, etc. that would have any implications on my future career? Would I have to make up some BS story on how I've been discriminated against? Could something go bad (e.g. worst case scenario, they are suspicious of me not being Bi and they spread the word across the street and black mail me from all banks)? 

Q2: What's the REAL risk/reward? On a surface level, you get the brand name internship – Goldman Sacks. But, how well does this reflect on my resume? Say I don't get a return offer and pull up the following year to BofA and am applying for a regular internship/SA position. When they see a white, straight-looking male pull up to the interview with a D&I summit on their resume, will they get suspicious and/or ask any questions as to what I self-identified with?

Side-Note: does appearance matter? Would a Giga Chad have more difficulty pulling this off than a soyboy? Personally, I'm no Chad Alpha, but definitely don't look/talk like I'm LGBTQQIAAP+. 

Any other thoughts or insights would be greatly beneficial. Would enjoy perspectives from both believers and non-believers in D&I to see how listing something like this on a resume might be viewed like during an interview.

Your workplace will make it very much known to everyone that you are their newest LGBTQ diversity hire. If you're cool with all your peers thinking you're a "tranquil" queer person who likes getting fucked in the ass on your protected weekends, then go right ahead. 

 

What is even this. As an actual member of the LGBTIQ+ community, I’m super annoyed whenever some white, straight men come up to me and say that they put bisexual as their sexual orientation on their job apps. Like come on, don’t be THAT desperate.

Coming back to your point, like others say, your entrance into the company will be regarded as “diversity.” Do you sit well with the fact that people know you’re bisexual and will ask you to attend LGBTIQ+ affinity network’s events when time comes? Do you sit well with the fact that at least several people in the small finance world think that you’re bisexual and will bring that up at some point?

Just like how Americans can detect who are actually American people or not, us the alphabet mafia also knows whether you’re a fake or not. Gaydar is a thing, and when you talk to the actual gay VPs/MDs/C-suite, their high EQ smells your bullshit right away and knows that you’re lying about your sexuality. You may get through the recruitment, but to stay in the firm and work with actual gay people who know you lie your way in? Can you do that for the rest of your career?

With that said, faking your identity and taking a part of firms’ support for people who actually need it is not funny. To anyone who’s actually doing this, you guys are the worst.

 

thanks. you made a lot of valid points that I didn't consider. but at the same time, you addressed the morality of the issue of anyone who does this being "desperate" which fundamentally accepts the premise that ACTUAL LGBTIQ+ people even need something as bullshit as diversity hires. making an argument for ethnic diversity hires is one thing, but the fact that one white dude likes penis has more opportunities in regards to these special programs and pipelines over another likes vagina is (to me) a stretch. do you genuinely feel like LGBTQI+ individuals really need special treatment in terms of hiring at this day in age where even saying something like this would be get someone canceled simply because they enjoy sex with different people? i just don't see anyone in banking giving a fuck, but if homophobia is rampant in Wall Street I'd certainly reconsider my position.

I fail to see your points. Being out and proud isn’t desperate. Lying to be part of something you’re not IS desperate.

Because you’re straight, lemme remind you sth: sexuality is both a sexual and a social construct. It means that being gay affects you in who you fuck and also how others treat you. I know that recruitment is terrible and it makes everyone demoralized, but if you think harder about it, gay people get mistreated every day. Even I’m sitting my ass here in America, I get disturbed every day by the fact that if I move my ass to some conservative countries like Russia, I will be detained in no days. Gay people are affected by many things outside their bed, so stop minimizing gay people’s experience by saying that they’re just different in how they enjoy sex. No. The world treats them much different, and you won’t get it until you’re in their shoes. Which is why your move to fake your sexuality in app is so shitty. Gay people need to gain representation in Wall Street so that they don’t have to hide behind closed doors and pray that no one gets to them. I know, they get a little special treatment, but trust me, outside the Wall Street bubble, gay people are treated like shit as compared to straight people. Look at the suicide rate in gay people as compared to straight people and u know what I mean

 

Just do it bro, it’s really not that serious. Attend some events, be personable, have some conversations, and get back to work. No one who is performing has time to care about who you like to fuck. Secure the offer and move on. JUST DONT TELL ANYONE. Including your dumbass friends who you think would never snitch. It could come back to bite you in the ass decades from now.

 

I have a friend who did this and got an opportunity at a top group. It worked obviously, but super awkward. They placed him with an LGBTQ mentor, he attended all the events, and he had to pose for those cringe LinkedIn post so the firm could flaunt their LGBTQ employees. Everyone who he was connected to on LinkedIn now assumes he is gay. If he corrects them and it gets out he risks his job. Of course he could have said no to all that, but that would also raise red flags. So as long as you don't care about the side effects. I have no problem with people exploiting a system as broken as diversity recruiting, but just be aware of the possibility of everyone thinking you love getting you cheeks clapped.
