Questions to ask MD of different group

Hello everyone,

I'm currently an undergraduate student recruiting for investment banking internships and have been actively networking with professionals at various firms. One particular bank has caught my attention, and I'm eager to make a strong impression.

Through some warm connections, I've been introduced to a senior leader who holds a Global Head title at the firm. While he’s not part of the Investment Banking division (he runs a different group), I'll be speaking with him soon. Given his role outside of IB, I'm unsure what specific questions I should ask to make the most of our conversation.

What kind of questions would you recommend asking a Global Head from a different division while still expressing interest in the investment banking side of the firm?

Thank you in advance for your insights!

  1. Career Path and Experience:

    • "Can you share your career journey and how you reached your current position as Global Head?"
    • "What key experiences or decisions were pivotal in your career progression?"
  2. Industry Insights:

    • "What are the current trends and challenges in your division, and how do they impact the broader firm?"
    • "How do you see the relationship between your division and the investment banking division evolving in the future?"
  3. Firm Culture and Strategy:

    • "How would you describe the culture at [Firm Name], and what makes it unique compared to other firms?"
    • "What strategic initiatives is your division focusing on, and how do they align with the overall goals of the firm?"
  4. Advice for Aspiring Bankers:

    • "What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in investment banking at [Firm Name]?"
    • "Are there any particular skills or experiences you believe are essential for success in investment banking?"
  5. Networking and Opportunities:

    • "Can you suggest any other professionals within the firm that I should connect with to learn more about the investment banking division?"
    • "What opportunities for cross-division collaboration exist at [Firm Name], and how can someone in investment banking benefit from them?"

These questions will help you gain valuable insights from the Global Head while demonstrating your genuine interest in the firm and its investment banking division.
