Reaching out to firms on behalf of my club

I’m going to be an SA this summer at a EB. My school is a nontarget, but has been slightly increasing placement recently (2 in 2018, 13 last year, 7 already this year). This is due to our investment banking workshop, which I’ll be leading next year. We have a few firms that come to campus, but I’m hoping to increase this number.

Question for people on recruiting teams - how would you feel if a student reached out on behalf of his club asking to start a resume drop? I was thinking about creating a deck advertising the club and our placements (BBs, EBs, MMs) and attaching the deck. How would you suggest getting more firms to come to campus without having alumni there?

Having been in a similar spot leading a student run club and trying to make inroads at firms, I would recommend starting by using your connections. We were successful in getting the banks that we placed into to come give exclusive info sessions by leveraging the relationships our members had to banks where they interned or where recent grads worked. Within about a year, other banks started reaching out to us to schedule these info sessions even if we didn't have placement. This has worked very well for us, so hopefully you can replicate something similar.

I would also say that ensuring you have high quality candidates is very important. If a banker sees XYZ school, ABC IB workshop on a resume and the applicant is really smart, they will remember this next time they see the same XYZ school, ABC IB workshop. This is exactly what happened to us as well, I had a banker reach out to schedule an info session next year because of how impressed he was with the preparedness of applicants.

Hope this is helpful! It's not easy and will likely take longer time than your tenure (it definitely has for us), but I think making IB more accessible is a worthy goal and salute you for contributing to your school.

I know a lot of student clubs that just email a club portfolio inviting the recruiting teams of the offices/firms to come for an information session on campus. you will be surprised at how many positive responses you get, especially when recruiting teams try to spend money for these opportunities
