Real Estate IB vs Operational Risk Management

In hindsight, what do you guys think would have been the better approach to investment banking at a BB coming from a non target school.

I was offered a position at BB in their Operational Risk Department which is relatively new and being incorporated with market and credit risk now.

I also had the opportunity as a intern at Jones Lang LaSalle in their real estate IB department.

I accepted the offer at the BB because having the BB on my resume I felt would position me better coming out from school. Also I felt it would be easier to network with those in the IB dept. Also the pay was much higher.

Which offer would you guys have taken?

The way I see it.

The real estate IB one would imo be without a doubt better for getting a full time investment banking offer. That being said, the position at the BB would probably put you in a better position for just about anything else.

Unless you're absolutely dead set on IB, I personally wouldn't even hesitate to choose the BB.

True, the pay might be higher at the BB, but you took a relatively back office position which doesn't seem like there is a lot of banker interaction - correct me if I'm wrong. I think it would be a struggle to find opportunities to build a network of bankers within the BB as someone in ops.

Personally I would've taken the IB boutique offer, but if you want to see the pros of taking the ops job, you have a lot more free time to devote to any extracurriculars and to create some great applications for business school, if this is what you want to do down the road.

You usually have valuable advice but I'm not sure this particular post is relevant.

Operation risk is not the same thing as operations and jones lang lasalle is not a boutique investment bank. It's not even a bank.
