Recruiting Timeline
I go to a top 10-15 school where many banks come to recruit. We're not in NYC but we're basically next to the next biggest metropolitan city. I only recently started considering a career in investment banking / S&T in the past few months. I'm not a traditional math/econ/stats/finance major but have a good amount of exposure to finance though extracurriculars and classes. I also have had some strong internships at F500 companies but not in finance. I'm in a mentorship program that is run by a bunch of investment bankers and the goal of the program is to help the mentees get interviews at the banks we apply to. The program is ongoing and they serve as resources if we have questions and provide us with advice and information about recruiting and interviewing. For now, I've been told I should be applying and reaching out to people (alums, connections, professors, etc.)
I have friends who know so much more about recruiting who are already flying to NYC for interviews and attending preinterview dinners. Am I behind? Am I screwed? I don't understand if I'm just behind schedule or what because my mentors said I'm fine but I know many friends who are much further in the process. Again, I don't know enough in general so I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on the timeline.

So you're by Chicago? Is this the Kelley program at Indiana University? If so, you're fine.
If not, you're also fine. It's still very early. My interviews picked up after winter break, and my bank is still doing diversity programs (which always happen first)
Haha, yea Chicago and the program is kind of like a professional mentorship program based on a common goal/ interest.
Do you think some of my friends who are interviewing did so through 'accelerated programs'?
You should definitely be networking your ass off by this point. I never did, but I know a lot of kids made trips out to New York to grab coffees and catch up with the people they networked with. Getting face to face interaction is a solid way to earn a first round phone interview. Once you get that, it's just your performance that will dictate the rest of your process.

I'm from Chicago but I've been here my whole life, I refuse to intern/work here. I want to recruit for NY. My friends - some are definitely recruiting for Chicago offices - but others are not eligible for diversity programs and have been flown to NYC.
