Rejected for a role but told to expect another opening — how seriously should I take this?
I interviewed for an Analyst position in September and was told afterward that I was the second choice. The team hired someone else, but that person subsequently left, so they came back to me for the reopened position.
The head of the team then reached out directly for a conversation, explicitly saying it wasn’t an interview and that she wanted to get to know me.
The recruiter called today and said they ultimately selected another candidate. However, she said the team expects another opening in January or February, wants to stay in touch, and that the process would be streamlined with no formal process.
For people familiar with recruiting at large banks, how would you interpret this? Does it sound like genuine interest in bringing me on for the next opening, potentially with an abbreviated process, or more like a polite rejection? Should I realistically expect them to follow up, or assume I’ll need to stay on their radar myself?
