Rejecting Offer / Dropping Out: They want to know which firm I chose?

Hey fellas,

Recently I signed an offer with a BB. So afterwards I dropped out of a few superdays, and I also turned down an offer at another BB. I phrased my emails pretty politely, saying thanks for the opportunity and I really enjoyed the process, and I hope to stay in touch, etc.

But now the people at the superdays and the BB I turned down have all responded back to me asking which firm I have chosen to go with. After I ignored them for a bit (I didn't know what to say), the BB that I turned down had an HR person send a follow up and ask where I was headed.

Minor problem with the BB I turned down: in the superday one of the interviewers asked if I would sign an offer if presented one. I said yes (as would anybody). This wasn't even the last interview (so he didn't actually give me the offer then), so I definitely didn't renege on anyone.

Are there any bad intentions on their part? Or are they just curious? How should I approach this problem? What do I tell them? I didn't renege on anyone!

Would HR ever tell you why you were rejected?

"Hey scroogemcduck, the second MD you interviewed with thought you were pretty weird and that joke you tried telling during lunch didn't go over well with Associate #2, we were also concerned about your low GPA. All the best."

Don't respond or respond with something vague that does not list the firm you are working for.

 

Just tell them, why is basic politeness and common sense lacking on this forum? They want to know who they are competing with in the future. Or they are simply freaking curious...I know I would be!

 

I highly doubt the HR person is losing sleep over it or even gives it a second thought when someone doesn't reply but companies don't tell you for liability reasons. They're just constantly afraid of getting sued. I've had many people email me after we didn't hire them and most of the time I'd be happy to give back constructive criticism but I've been advised far more than once to not do it by lawyers/HR.

And even though I actually lol'd at Sil and it would be awesome to send that back, I agree with @hashtag4580". Why not just tell them. They just wonder where they're losing people to. It's nothing off your back.
