Reliance on AI

Hey monkeys incoming SA here (ignore user). I've been reading a lot on the news, wso, x, etc., that a lot of the new analysts/interns have become too reliant on AI as a result of using it foolishly throughout college, which has impacted the quality of their work while increasing the gap between the top and worst performing analysts.

I wanted to know what your main recommendations are to stop this from happening to me, or if there is something I should start/avoid doing?

Thanks!

To avoid falling into the trap of over-relying on AI and to ensure you're among the top-performing analysts, here are some key recommendations based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Develop a Strong Foundation in Core Skills

  • Master the Basics: Focus on building a solid understanding of financial modeling, valuation techniques, and accounting principles. AI can assist, but it can't replace your ability to interpret and analyze data critically.
  • Excel Proficiency: Learn advanced Excel functions and shortcuts. Many top analysts emphasize the importance of being quick and efficient in Excel, as it's still the backbone of most financial analysis.
  • FactSet/CIQ Shortcuts: Spend time learning customizable shortcuts in tools like FactSet or Capital IQ. These tools are widely used and can give you an edge in efficiency.

2. Use AI as a Tool, Not a Crutch

  • Understand AI's Limitations: AI is great for tasks like summarizing 10-Ks, running sentiment analysis, or generating initial models. However, it struggles with nuanced judgment, interpreting complex footnotes, or understanding qualitative factors like management tone during earnings calls.
  • Double-Check AI Outputs: Always verify the results AI provides. For example, if you're using AI to generate a financial model, cross-check the numbers and assumptions manually to ensure accuracy.
  • Learn the "Why": Don't just accept AI's outputs—understand the reasoning behind them. This will help you spot errors and improve your own analytical skills.

3. Hone Your Analytical Judgment

  • Critical Thinking: AI can't replace your ability to think critically about non-stationary environments, causality, or unique business situations. Practice applying your judgment to real-world scenarios.
  • Stay Curious: Dive deep into the data. As one WSO thread highlights, the best analysts spend more time exploring and understanding their datasets than just building models.

4. Build Soft Skills

  • Communication: AI won't help you explain your findings to a PM or senior banker. Practice presenting your analysis clearly and concisely.
  • Networking: Build relationships with colleagues and mentors. This will help you learn from their experiences and gain insights that AI can't provide.

5. Avoid Common Pitfalls

  • Don't Over-Automate: Avoid the temptation to automate everything. Some tasks require a human touch, especially when dealing with qualitative data or unique situations.
  • Avoid Overfitting: Just like AI models can overfit data, analysts can over-rely on tools without understanding the broader context. Always keep the bigger picture in mind.

6. Stay Ahead of the Curve

  • Learn Basic Coding: While you don't need to be a data scientist, understanding SQL or Python can help you work more effectively with data scientists and leverage AI tools better.
  • Stay Updated: Follow industry trends and learn how AI is being used in finance. This will help you adapt and use it strategically.

By focusing on these areas, you'll ensure that AI enhances your performance rather than becoming a crutch. Remember, the best analysts are those who combine technical skills, critical thinking, and strong communication to deliver value. Good luck with your SA stint—crush it!

Don’t use it for anything in college aside from reviewing papers or helping understand complex subject. Use it at work but check its work. Ultimately, if you don’t have the skills from promoting your degree into existence then it’s on you. If you need to update your actual skills you should have text books, learning opportunities here and places like CFI that can help gets your skills up to snuff.
