Bump, in a similar situation
going in for a networking chat a few times a week is expensive? How expensive would commuting every day have seemed? Or if you were planning on renting a place in the city... why not just do that anyway. More flexibility for networking, you could go to the office if you wanted/needed, and enjoy living in the city for a summer.
I had a remote internship my sophmore year. It was the only offer I had gotten so I was estatic, but I found out soon that I wasn't doing really doing anything at all for them. Luckily I ended up getting an offer a week later from a real botique bank.
My buddy was in a similar boat last year for a dif company that had him work remotely and had the same experience. I'd say pay would be an indicator- if they're paying you, they're gonna put you to use or else that's a waste of their money, but if its unpaid, doesn't matter too much. But don't take my word, I'm sure there are certain remote internships that could be a really good learning opprotunity, just be proactive and keep networking.
