Reneg Advice

Accepted offer from firm B (DC Advisory for example), which I accepted.

Recently got an offer from firm A (Harris Williams for example).

Do I tell DC Advisory I am reneging before accepting HW? Or does it not really matter and am I overthinking?

You're overthinking it. I'd say that you honor the firm B, since you already accepted it. I think you're already in a bad situation because you have two offers when you should've took the first and went off the recruiting market. It's all about commitment.

I’d you reneg make sure you signed. Yes they will be upset but do what’s best for YOU. In my opinion a bank like HW will take you further. The independent boutique will only do so much.

I reneged on a big 4 CF for a MM IB. Best decision I’ve made imo.

Tough scenario because they’re in a similar business (both MM), so not the easiest reneg compared to MM to BB/EB or BB to EB vice versa, where it’s super clear to see why someone made that move. (Maybe dc advisory to HW is a clear move idk)

But ive seen ppl move within similar “tier” for personal reasons (ppl don’t rly regard it as a smart move) but do whats best for you at the end of the day. Think about your near term goals and how each platform can help you reach that.

This happens all the time so don't worry. Just make sure that you have SIGNED the contract with the new firm and it has been signed back by them. Also, make sure the difference between firm A and B is actually justified (not reneging based on something stupid like catering).

Once that has been done, send an email to HR saying I cant proceed and say some BS reason (do not say signing for a competitor or anything, its none of their business)

Worst case scenario, HR calls you after that email and keeps asking why but you turn them down again politely. Don't update your LinkedIn with the new firm till 1/2 months go by and everyone has forgotten.

Don't overthink it and just do it. When you feel bad, just remember that any of these firms would fire you in 1 second if they had to.
