Reneging on Sophomore Internship Offer
Currently recruiting for IB SA27. I accepted an investment ops offer at an AM in the SE for Summer 2026, but just received a portfolio management/analysis offer at a different AM in NYC. I definitely prefer the NYC role since I’m from the area + it seems more interesting + I believe it’s more relevant for IB than ops, which I’ve heard is a dead end.
Should I renege on the ops offer? I know some bridges may be burned regardless, but is there a way to do this without damaging my relationship with my school’s career center since the role came through an external org’s program that may be connected to the career center (think SEO, MLT, etc but on a smaller scale)? For context, the ops offer deadline was yesterday. I realize I should have asked for an extension while waiting on the PM decision, but at this point I’m looking for the best course of action.
You'll for sure burn all of the bridges you made at the ops offer firm since it seems you just accepted it. It's unfortunate because no matter how unrelated things are this industry is unbelievably small. Reneging on something smaller like this could have impacts way down the road. Do what you think is best for your career longevity and stick to that decision. I would try to keep this new offer and you accepting it (if you go that route) on the down low for a long, long time. No Linkedin posts or anything.
If your career center finds out and the firm who gave you the ops offer breaks a potential "pipeline" of candidates from your school you will be fucked. They don't play about placing their students. They want you out of college making big boy money to send back to the university.
Remember, these are internships, and will not lead to "dead-ends." You can just have a good experience, learn a lot, and leverage anything to pivot instantly.
Makes sense, I was going to keep the internship on the DL until I started anyway. My career center page says “you shouldn’t renege, but if you are in a situation where reneging is a possibility then contact the career center and we will help you with the process (regarding balancing your career needs with our employer relationships).” Would you recommend I contact them? Kind of sounds like a trap TBH
I it’s worth mentioning, the external org’s main program is for college admissions but they also run a very small, newer program with a few employers, which is how I got the ops internship. Also, my school has no alumni at the offer I’m considering reneging from if that context helps
are u regarded...def don't contact your school team. that's a straight ticket to being banned from all OCR for the rest of uni.
So you’d say take the PM offer and let the investment ops recruiter know that I’m no longer going to be interning there w/o saying anything to my career center and j hope it doesn’t get to them?
yes
Congrats on ATLAS fellows lol
