Reneging show up on a background check

Does reneging on a job offer come up on a background check?

Say you did an SA gig and then reneged on the job offer you received from them for another job, would the new company find out when they confirmed your previous employment?

It depends on the extent of their check. If they're just looking at records to see you received paychecks from them - that is, you weren't lying about having the job - then you should be fine.

If, for some reason, they call the company to see if they'd recommend you as a candidate, then you might be in trouble. However, that's unlikely. They would ask you for referrals first, and a background check won't occur until you received an offer, so it's likely just checking records for pay stubs or something similar to prove you actually worked there.

I wouldn't sweat it.

Well, you have to consider the risk of people talking. I know everyone always says this, but Wall Street really is a small world.

If the bank you accepted with hears that you are interviewing elsewhere, you'll lose that offer and they'll probably inform the bank you are interviewing at. It's a risk you need to carefully consider before making any moves.

With that said, people do renege and it's a given in this industry, but just tread carefully.

no chance. this isn't a background check??? if they ask if you ever applied for a job w/ the company and lie than that would be bad and grounds for termination.

I had a friend who got an offer at a bank, accepted it and then ended up getting an offer at a much better bank. The better bank refused to give out the offer once they found out he had already accepted.

This happens all the time and its for more than just propriety's sake. The reason is becasue if the career center finds out a company is trying to hire away "spoken for" kids, they might lose their recruiting privileges on-campus.

Hard to say if the new company will find out if HR just runs an automatic and outsourced background screening through a company like Choicepoint. Generally it will not show up in any records accessible to outsiders that you received an offer, but they may simply call to confirm with references and the cat will be out of the bag.

Yes, Wallstreet is a small world and the fact that you reneged may bump up against you in unexpected ways so I wouldn't test Karma if I were you.
