Renting vs Buying

As a junior banker making ~200k, is it possible to buy a condo/ apartment near work in NYC? I hear a lot about renting with a roommate. I would rather put my money into an appreciating asset that I could maybe transition into a cash flowing rental once I move up the ranks. How common is buying a house rather than renting in NYC? And is it possible to get approved for a loan?
