Resources to understand consumer & retail industry?

Joining a BB FT in a different coverage group, but have started to become a lot more interested in the consumer/retail industry.

I know there are several news outlets with retail sections (CNBC, Reuters, WSJ) and things like Retail Brew, but wondering if anyone covering this industry has other suggestions for primers, material, metrics/multiples/drivers, deal/industry trend news, etc to help enhance my understanding. Thanks so much.

I’m a 2nd year analyst in C&R!

Unfortunately, I get most of my information from reports written by our research division and/or internal requests for some sort of data.

Maybe try taking a look at investor presentations published by C&R companies! Most companies publish annual investor presentations that consist of recent financial / operational performance, recent and anticipated trends, company updates / strategy / outlook. These presentations should also show what metrics matter most to investors (ie: big retailers might show same store sales (sss) while connected fitness companies might show monthly churn.) You can find these presentations in the investor relation section of company websites, and they’re very easy to read.

there is nothing complex about retail. Repeat: there is nothing complex about retail. If you need help understanding retail, you perhaps need to reevaluate your intelligence
Same-store-growth
average transaction size
revenue / sq feet
traffic conversion to paying

There is nothing wrong with gaining additional insight before an internship. I repeat there is nothing wrong with gaining additional insight before an internship.
