Read up on news and industry primers relevant to ur coverage, read front page of WSJ everyday, follow a few stocks and get a deep understanding of the business/valuation/catalysts/earnings (this goes a long way - makes it much easier to be able to understand other businesses once on the desk), brush up on technicals, learn to build a DCF and LBO so u understand the mechanics, and don’t be a bot on the desk be normal with analysts and be very very communicative.
Not my post but thanks for the advice, found it very helpful.
One follow-up: how does being well-versed in your coverage group help during the internship? It seems like that knowledge would only show through the final project. Do you have any tips on that front?
I think that if you are working on deals and you have a decent idea of the businesses place within the industry, it can really help you both understand the deal, but also ask more insightful questions about the deal, which will help you learn more, but also display your interest/knowledge in the industry to analysts/associates.
What about for a Generalist/Rotational internship?
