Returning to firm at FT despite not getting RO during prior internship

Didn't get an RO but team were sponsoring for me to continue working with them (no RO due to headcount / politics)
Am considering another role at another firm (competitor) and they suggested to stay in touch and would sponsor a return later
Has anyone ever done this?
