Screwed if you dont have an IB Boutique internship before junior SA recruiting?

I was talking to friends of mine at Berkeley who had managed to get BB SA positions and they were telling me that almost everyone who got offers already had boutique IB experience.

How much more difficult is it if you dont have a boutique IB internship by the time your a junior to land a BB SA offers?

Is it pretty much a prerequisite at this point given the caliber of students going after these positions?

Just find some good work experience. It doesn't have to be all finance related. Go to a place where you can learn about anything, and take on some projects of your own

Agreed. I know a couple of kids going GS IBD (full time, were summer analysts last year) in a month or so, one had only BB PWM and the other had mid market PWM and a no name hedge fund

lemme guess, targets

Went to a non-target a knew people who got BB IBD SAs with everything from big 4 audit, back office, asset management, pwm and even one person with nothing but a bullshit study abroad "internship".

Totally disagree. Though it helps with Why Banking (for some terrible, illogical reason) it's nowhere near a prerequisite. Normally those kids just have connections.

I hate victims who respect their executioners

My Berkeley friend who will be summering at MS/GS this summer received his offer with no prior IB experience. Actually, of all the people I have talked to coming from my non-target who ended up at BB's I cant recall a single one who interned at a boutique prior.
