Seeking Advice -- Move to an industry focused boutique?

I'm currently a first year analyst at a newer middle market investment bank group mostly involved in debt capital markets and corporate finance advisory. The size of the group is less than 20, so we do not have any industry or product groups. My ultimate goals are to work for a small PE shop where we would be buying out small companies and improving operations and offering strategic advice (I do not want to join a PE firm that simpy offers money for a set return). I would first like to get some experience though at a larger firm, hopefully a BB.

I might have the opportunity to move to a boutique firm that speciales in a certain industry. I have thought things through, and I believe this could potentially help me achieve my two ultimate goals -- I have two questions:

  • If I were to specialize in a certain industry, would I look more attractive to a bulge bracket if there were openings for a lateral move in that particular industry group?

  • Would I have more interaction with the PE industry working in a smaller IB shop essentially because we would be working with smaller companys and more PE firms would be buying out our clients?

Thanks in advance.
