Senior employee asks your opinion just to tease you?

Currently doing an extended off cycle internship before starting full time, and I have this associate constantly asking me to answer questions literally everytime we sit together with another senior banker who's an expert on the subject. This usually goes like, I relunctantly give out my opnion, she invites the senior person to join our conversation and offer his/her insight, then she gets back at me by saying something like "boom sorry kid but your answer was wrong".

She usually treats me okay and is willing to teach me things but this literally annoys the hell out of me. Is this some sort of flex? And how can I stop being teased without outright refusing to answer her question? I had tried saying "I don't know" but she didn't let me just get away with it

Yeah that's most likely just a flex. I had that happen to me with a PM once, and one of the younger guys said that it's just to make themselves feel superior. Don't worry about it. If she isn't doing anything worse than teasing you about it, then nothing to worry about. You will just have to do with it. She's probably just an insecure person.

yea just play along with it. If you aren't working under her for long then do that until you aren't working under her anymore, and then don;t worry about it.

Always remember - the abused will tend to abuse. She's either projecting her own experience from when she was a junior or she's so insecure about her credibility that she needs to feel validated by proving she knows more than an intern. Just comfort yourself that over the long run, you will outperform her in any job that requires a modicum of EQ and one day, she'll be turning your comments at 2am.

I agree with the other commenters, that sort of mild nastiness is just a fact of life when working with some people. I figure you can either ignore it or try to overcome it. If you wanted to overcome it you could either: Hunker down and study the hell out of whatever subjects she likes to test you with (sort of an IB/med school-esque route) Or every time she asks you a hard question you can say, “Before I answer, I’d like to hear your answer and explanation” and every time before you answer qualify it with some “This isn’t my subfield, but if I had to guess...” or something. You could also try to think up some difficult questions yourself and beat them to it (obviously without the mocking comments at the end), the answers to which you should either have a legitimate need for or already know so you can point out flaws. You’d be amazed by the things that senior people don’t know or have forgotten in this industry (if it’s even mildly outside of their sphere).
