Shafted
Half looking for advice, half going on a massive rant. I am a summer intern in S&T in a BB in the US.Theres 2 guys interning on the desk, myself and a chinese guy who went to school in US.After about 2 weeks into the internship,I noticed this guy start leaving early, coming in late, taking 1 hour lunches and generally showing 0 enthuasism. Then he told me last week he has a FT offer from another BB and he prefers that role to the one hes working in now.So he decided to tell the guy who hired him that he should let other interns sit on the desk and that he wasnt interested in a FT offer. This guy then told the desk head who frantically rung the intern up pratically begging him to join.He was then told to talk to the MD of the entire area.
At this stage it was quite obvious they wanted this guy right from the start now matter how he preformed on the desk.Theres obviously some big deals coming up involving chinese clients/corporates and they need this guy.Since I know there is a headcount of one,I am screwed. The whole internship for me has been a waste of time because right from day 1,I never had any chance.I tried my best, staying late, working hard and interacting with the team whilst all the time it was pointless.
Has this ever happened to others, where you only find out late on that you were f*&ked right from day 1.
Don't worry about it man. Give it your best shot, so that you'll have something great for your resume which will help you get a job elsewhere. Besides, don't be so sure that the other guy nailed an offer. Didn't he say he's gonna leave? That means you'll get the spot.
I wouldnt worry about it. Just like Gardner said, if he's telling desk heads that he's going to leave and isnt interested in a full time offer I'm sure they won't pull for him too hard, even if they do have some Chinese deals coming up. They need to look at the long run, hiring new analysts is a long term investment.
Go speak to someone and fight for yourself, or at least see if you can interview at another desk/group at the bank. If not, start making calls to the other banks looking to see if you can interview.
I hear that feeling, but just hustle even more for FT recruiting. Definitely put in any last goodwill you can, but ultimately somethings are really just out of your hands.
If you feel like they are really after him no matter what, start reaching out to your contacts and alums. Honestly, having a SA BB IBD on your resume is pretty damn impressive, so just hustle with the smaller banks and such.
that's kinda strange, considering being a minority is usually not a good thing in the stereotypical Waspy/Jewish banking culture...
and just a sidenote: my associate is bitchign like crazy right beside me.
