shaving (SA)
so i start SA in about a month, and i want to make sure my face doesn't look raw, razor burn, etc from shaving every day. at school i shave once every 2 or 3 days, my beard grows in fast and thick so i'd have to shave every day this summer. i tried shaving every day for about 3 weeks as a freshman and it did not turn out well.
currently i use a mach 3 turbo with nivea sensitive skin gel and nutrogena post shave lotion. works well when i shave every 2-3 days. id appreciate any suggestions from equipment changes, to technique, or whatever has worked for you. thanks
I use this Peter North Facial Medicated Moisturizer when I have to shave daily, I have the same type of growth as you, and if applied correctly it really fights off razor burn and any rashes that may occur, I used to get them under my kneck.
Nivia, imo, is a joke that you have to grow out of once you start shaving almost every day. It's for highschoolers and people who don't have heavy facial hair like us greaseballs and Greeks.
I have the mach 3 turbo, love it, but I'm old school in that sense, I'm sure theres better tech out there.

I bet you don't use a proper shaving brush.
If not, you're just slopping shaving gel on your face with your fingers. You aren't allowing the gel to give you its maximum benefit, leading to razor burn, etc. Get a good badger hair brush and scrub the shaving gel evenly throughout your face. Your face won't get "raw" even if you shave everyday.
Yah try a brush. I use Kiehl's brushless shave creame (no need for brush with this) which works well. Also, try something with a smaller blade (Gillette has a 3-blade disposable that has a smaller head than mach-3). Shave products by Anthony are good as well. Finally, as an above posted mentioned, check out the Art of Shaving. I bought a 'starter' kit, (as ridiculous as this seems) it came with pre-shave oil, shave cream, shave brush, and aftershave... not to mention a dvd.

Try using a pre-shave oil, followed by a REAL shaving cream, followed by an aftershave with a strong moisturizing agent. The shave oil makes a huge difference, you just rub it into your slightly damp face and let it sit for a minute or two before you lather up with shaving cream. Also... make sure you're shaving with hot water and after you shower... since the hot water/hot shower softens up your face and whiskers. Yes, I just said whiskers.
You can get all of the above at Art of Shaving which is in high end department stores and the internet. They have a few stores in Manhattan as well. There is always Kiehls which has all of the above as well. I personally prefer the Art of Shaving pre-shave oil (which I don't really use anymore) and shaving cream and really like the Kiehls aftershave balm.

Its more expensive than the shit you get at Duane Reade, but the shaving cream should literally last you like 3 months... it lathers up really well.
I'm sure the Mach 3 razor is fine. Just make sure you don't use it too long. If its not gliding across your face anymore time to use a new razor head.
I've used a brush before and the shaving cream I use supposedly is meant for use with a brush. But I don't particularly think it makes much of a difference. It just takes longer. Its just as easy to rub the shaving cream into your face with your hands. The brush really came about back in the day when everyone used shaving soap... which was a bar and couldn't easily be lathered up by hand.
Agreed on Art of Shaving products, especially the pre-shave oil...Mach 3, assuming it's changed regularly, is fine...I use a brush, but like MH, I don't think it's a necessity
Why not use an advanced electric shaver?
If you do want to stick with a real razor, then yes going with a shaving brush and quality shave cream is a must. I have always used Taylor of Old Bond Street with a Vulfix brush, both of which are excellent products, but have also heard nothing but positive feedback from guys I know that use Kiehls

I've heard some of the new ones give you a close shave like a regular razor blade.
Any phillips one. The ones I've had have been superb and give an extremely close shave.

if you get an electric shaver make sure you get one that can be plugged in when you shave. its the worst when its out of juice and you wake up late and you have to borrow someone elses at 630.
+1 for a badger brush and real shaving cream. I also recommend buying a double edge safety razor- you get a closer shave with less irritation, and it's much much cheaper in the long run cause razor blades cost a few cents compared to Mach 3 or whatever cartridges they sell at most drug stores.

I use the Gillette Fusion and shave every day. Initially after I shave my skin is pretty irritated but right after I dry my face with a towel I use the Vaseline brand lotion. It works great and it doesn't smell weird either.
