Short deal experience

Hello everyone! For context, I am applying for IB internships in Paris.

At the end of my previous 6-month IB internship (industry team, Europe), we won a mandate (M&A/JV) following a request-for-proposal I actively worked on. As a result, during 3–4 weeks, I worked on several materials/analyses and attended some meetings, but nothing really impressive: kick-off meeting presentation, other presentations to share ideas with the client, NDA with the client.

It is a somewhat complex deal with many aspects to be clarified with the client, and therefore a rather long "Analysis/Structuring" phase was allocated at the beginning of the projected timeline, even before preparing the IM, etc.

As I have no other deal experience, I thought about putting this on my resume, but I was wondering whether it is truly relevant. I also wondered if I am allowed to do so.

I would highly appreciate your opinion.

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, including deal experience on your resume as an intern is acceptable, but it must be done carefully and accurately. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Relevance and Presentation:

    • Even if your involvement was limited to the early stages of the deal, it is still relevant experience, especially since you actively contributed to materials, analyses, and client meetings.
    • Focus on highlighting your specific contributions and the skills you demonstrated, such as analytical work, client interaction, or understanding of the deal process.
  2. How to Frame It:

    • Use bullet points to describe your role in a concise and professional manner. For example:
      • "Contributed to the preparation of a successful M&A/JV mandate proposal, including kick-off meeting materials and client presentations."
      • "Conducted preliminary analyses and supported structuring discussions during the initial phase of a complex cross-border transaction."
    • Avoid exaggerating your role or claiming responsibilities you didn’t have.
  3. Ethical Considerations:

    • You are allowed to include this experience as long as you are truthful about your contributions. Misrepresenting your role or overstating your involvement could backfire during interviews.
  4. Resume Formatting Tips:

    • If the deal is still in progress, you can mention it as "ongoing" or "in progress" to clarify the status.
    • Use sub-bullets if necessary to provide more detail without cluttering your resume.

Including this experience is a smart move, especially since you don’t have other deal experience. Just ensure it’s framed accurately and professionally to showcase your value without overstepping. Good luck with your applications!
